Programme Coordinator Samos Action for Education - Job Description August 2020
Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2017. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. Since February 2019, we’ve been working on Samos, when we decided to expand our projects and scope throughout the Aegean Islands. We are operative in three different centres: The Banana House, with activity and language lessons for 18-23 years old; The Nest, in partnership with The Pedagogical Institute of Los Angeles, as an indoor playground for children and adults; and the Computer Lab, offering digital literacy classes and an Internet Café styled space.
Samos presents a different scenario compared to other hotspots, as the refugee camp is set on the outskirts of town; it displays a challenging context for the local community, refugee community and NGOs. The cohabitation between these drafts a complex context, where the reality of the island has drastically changed in the last years: the camp and the extended area (jungle) being part of the town, the presence of refugees and asylum seekers on public spaces causing local discomfort causing protests and demonstrations, possible opening of a closed camp in a near future, etc.
Manage a team of 20 volunteers or more, both from external and refugee community, ensuring the programme objectives are met.
Onboard new volunteers into their role as teachers/youth workers, organise professional training and teaching resources for all volunteers.

Take lead in supporting volunteers to plan, prepare, and teach language lessons and create a positive learning environment.
Lead on the development and implementation of new ideas for the centre including ways it can be used when teaching is not taking place e.g. community events and integration activities

Assist in delivering Child Protection training and Relationship Boundary training for every new volunteer.
Facilitate and attend weekly coordination meetings with other coordinators
Financial management, making sure that activities and costs are documented and justified for present and future accountability
