*CLOSED*: Samos Project Coordinator

Background

Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organisation founded in the UK and Greece in 2017. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. In early 2019, we launched a new Youth Centre project on Samos as an emergency response to the desperate condition of refugees on the island – a critical bottleneck on the road of flight to Europe.

AFE pursues two main goals with this project: first, we offer an essential safe space to the children and youth, in which they can rediscover a piece of childhood. Careful guidance in learning, playing and communal activities build resilience and develop peace-building mechanisms, an opportunity they are ill-afforded in the harsh, tense and frequently violent conditions in the camps. Second, we help students develop language and concentration as well as motor and cognitive skills through curricula of English, languages and projects, which also stimulate imagination and let students and participants explore their own interests ,old and new.

Samos Project

AFE has been active on Samos island since January 2019. We currently run 3 centres: The Banana House, a centre primarily for 18 - 23 year olds, running language classes, hot meals, showers, recreational activities and psychosocial support. The Banana House also opens for women-only every Sunday, as well as providing showers for medical cases as well as dedicated Saturday session for unaccompanied minors. Our second Centre, The Nest, is a specialised learning and play-space for children aged 2 - 7 and their parents, open 6 days a week. Finally, our IT Lab and Cinema offers access to computers and tech learning, alongside nightly film screenings for the refugee community.
