ACTION FOR EDUCATION MARCH 2021
We are looking to recruit a coordinator with a refugee background for our Project in Samos. Please apply and share with individuals you think might be interested.
Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2018. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. Since March 2019, we’ve been running the Banana House and Computer Lab - education centres for young adult refugees living in Vathy Camp. Here we teach languages (English, German, Greek), vocational skills, and digital skills. It is an emergency response to the desperate conditions experienced by refugees on Samos – a critical bottleneck on the road of flight to Europe.
AFE pursues two main goals with this project: first, we offer an essential safe space to young adults. Careful guidance in learning, recreation, and communal activities build resilience and develop peace-building mechanisms, an opportunity they are ill-afforded in the harsh, tense, and frequently violent conditions in the camps. We support our participants also by offering access to basic services, such as hygiene facilities, supplementary nutrition, and referrals to specialised assistance. Second, we help students develop and maintain language and concentration as well as practical and cognitive skills through curricula of English, languages and projects, which also stimulate imagination and let students and participants explore their own interests, old and new.
The challenges we have been facing throughout 2020 and 2021, and with which we require our new coordinator to lead us through, consist of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the likelihood of an imminent transfer of Vathy RIC residents to a new closed camp in Zervou.
