Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2018. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. Since January 2021, our operations on Chios consist of three learning centres for youth and young adults. This is an emergency response to the desperate conditions experienced by refugees on Chios – a critical bottleneck on the road of flight to Europe.

Each of our three centres, though they serve different demographics and have slightly varying activities and objectives, offer an essential safe space to youth with a focus on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable populations - including unaccompanied minors and young women. We support students to develop and maintain language and concentration as well as practical and cognitive skills through curricula of English, mathematics, languages and project-based learning. We also offer access to basic services, such as hygiene facilities, supplementary nutrition and referrals to specialised assistance.

Action for Education is committed to responding to the ever-evolving situation on Chios by staying informed with on-the-ground developments, working closely with local partners and the refugee community to provide targeted and sustainable interventions for the benefit of the asylum seeking community on Chios which are within our scope and means.

Responsibilities :

  • Lead, supervise and support a team of 4 project coordinators to effectively meet the programme objectives of their respective centres and fulfil their responsibilities, as well as leading dynamic and effective interventions to the situation for asylum seekers and refugees on Chios.

  • Subsequently share responsibility with the project coordinators in leading up to 20 volunteers, ensuring high standards of professionalism, high-quality service provision and a positive working environment.

  • Recruit and ensure the induction and onboarding of international, local and community volunteers for all centres.

  • Weekly scheduling and logistics of volunteers across the three centres.

  • Financial management - paying vendors and contractors, tracking all outgoing expenditure and making sure that all costs in Chios are documented and justified for present and future accountability.

  • Procurement - maintaining stock levels and sourcing and buying goods for each center from local vendors or through partnerships.

  • Managing physical infrastructure and assets - responsibility for all contracts, centres and apartments, maintenance and health and safety procedures. This list is not exhaustive and can include different tasks at different times.

  • Evaluate on-the-ground operations as well as situational changes on a monthly basis with project coordinators and directors, assessing our impact and adapting according to the needs, in line with AfE’s strategy.

  • Be part of a country-wide coordination team and in touch with coordinators across Greece. You will be involved in decision-making processes and the overall organisation’s efficiency, continuous improvement and operations.

  • Take an active role in coordinating effective grass-roots collaboration in Chios, as well as promoting collaboration between formal and non-formal education.

  • Ongoing liaison with local authorities, camp management, actors, stakeholders and the refugee/asylum-seeking community itself, in order to stay informed, responsive and further cooperation opportunities.

  • Maintaining existing partnerships and donor relations, as well as forging new cooperations where possible.

  • Assume some organisational responsibilities, in accordance with your interests, experiences and skill sets. Some examples include: fundraising, grant-writing, policy-review, communications etc.

  • Engage in learning opportunities to further professional development for yourself and the team.

  • Offering driving assistance to your various teams.

Your set of skills :

  • You are passionate about education and working in a challenging and dynamic working environment.

  • You are passionate about and confident in team management and leadership, including mentoring and/or coaching, supporting your team leaders and wider team members on a daily basis and have had significant experience in this area.

  • Strong written and verbal English.

  • Languages - good working knowledge of Greek will be an asset.

  • You have experience working or volunteering in similar contexts with a focus on education, project management or personnel - ideally with prior experience working on the Greek islands or mainland.

  • Professional background in youth work or education, especially with displaced populations in emergency contexts.

  • You share our vision of a world in which everyone has equal chances to access and be successful in vocational and academic pathways.

  • Strong understanding of humanitarian standards, INEE minimum standards, and child protection principles.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and planning skills.

  • Resourceful and strategic thinking .

  • Multi-tasker who performs well under pressure.

  • Digital literacy skills.

  • Driving licence.

Our offer :

  • Expenses covered up to €550/month and subsidised shared accommodation.

  • A travel bursary of €200/quarter.

  • Expected start date: June.

  • 6 months (with a 1 month, 3 month and 6 month review; further extension pending review). However, for this position we are looking for someone who will commit to the role, ideally for a minimum of one year, as the position does require longevity.
