Job Opening: Art Teacher for Young Children and their Parents

We are looking to recruit an art teacher with a refugee background for a new creative education project in Athens. Please apply and share with individuals you think might be interested.

Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2018. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities.

Since April 2019 we’ve been running The Nest programme in Greece The Nest is a child-friendly community space to support refugee communities and families, run in partnership with PILAglobal and Carry the Future.

During the lockdown and throughout 2020, many families arrived from the Greek islands to the mainland. In Athens, many are waiting to move or to find accommodation locally, but the situation is difficult. We opened this new Nest to meet the needs of the children and families in Athens.

The Nest is a place where children’s authentic ideas drive the experience – where they exercise their autonomy and find their own passions and voice. In the Nest Art Program, children (2 -7 years old) and parents are able to freely explore a range of carefully selected art materials, enabling them to find their unique way to be expressive and tell their story.

Material explorations may include the following: Paint / Clay / Paper and Mixed Media / Printmaking / Light and Shadow / Fabrication / Printmaking / Photography / Textiles.

Main Responsibilities

Including but not limited to:

  • Build and maintain a professional and warm atmosphere inside the team.

  • Design and prepare experiences with materials that invite exploration

  • Offer technical instruction to students when appropriate

  • Plan material progressions, as well as immersive artistic experiences

  • Observe, record and respond to the student's interests and wonderings

  • Collaborate with other educators at The Nest

  • Stay in close contact with PILAglobal to share successes and challenges

  • Work and report on a daily basis to the AFE coordination team

  • Keep material storage space and art space clean, appealing and accessible

  • Document the creative process via photo, video and writing as is permissible

  • Order and maintain supplies, as needed

  • Work with Nest teachers to familiarize them with materials

  • Build and maintain relationships with the families and the children

  • Contribute to AFE and PILAglobal’s quarterly reports

Requirements, skills, and experience

  • An open mind, creative, out-of-the-box spirit and passion for art and people!

  • A background in art, preferably including experience in art education

  • Strong written and verbal English and basic digital skills

  • Organised, efficient, and happy to take the lead with resource and database management e.g updating spreadsheets, tracking supplies, purchasing supplies, updating policies

  • Experience working with displaced populations in emergency contexts, with a focus on early education, human resources, and team management - ideally with prior experience working on the Greek islands or mainland

  • Willing and enthusiastic to be continuously engaged in pedagogical and educational training with AFE and our partner, PILAglobal

  • Working knowledge of one of the following languages: Kurdish (Sorani, Kurmanji or Badini), Arabic, Farsi, Lingala, French, Somali. ) Knowledge of more than one of these languages will be considered an asset. Proficiency in Greek will also be considered a strong asset.

Our offer

  • Salaried position (approx. €650/month) under Greek employment contract

  • A travel bursary of €200/quarter

  • Expected start date: mid-July

  • 6-month contract (with a 1 month, 3 months, and 6-month review)
