I'm Sammy! I thought since I'm the person that's going to be emailing you, as well as trying to support you in sharing your thoughts, feelings, and actions about what is going on in the world and what we can do to make a difference (aka your microphone!) that I should introduce myself.
One of the quotes I live by is "Sincerity is the key to eternity" Allen Ginsberg said that ages ago, and it was his birthday yesterday! He would have been 93 if he was alive. He was an authentic person who genuinely cared about people, and whose pure expressions changed the world. He was the first person (at least in the US!) to publicly talk about homosexuality, and was taken to court for this. He won with the help of his publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and thus, it became okay to talk about homosexuality. He was also one of the first to talk about mental health publicly, and a bunch of other things. Ginsberg believed that the"Purpose of poetry was to make the private world public."He inspired a whole generation, as well as The Beatles (their name even comes from the movement Ginsberg led - the 'beats'), The Clash, and Bob Dylan (Who inspired another generation!).
I made a documentary on the international impact that "Howl"and Allen Ginsberg had on the world, so I'm like very obsessed with this poem and could talk for ages and ages about it. Instead- if you're interested, you can just watch it!
The reason I'm telling you about "Howl" is because from creating this documentary, I learned that honest and authentic expression is powerful and can change the world. And that is what I'm going to do as your Comms Coordinator. I'm going to be as honest as I can about what we are doing at Action for Education as an organization, as well as about what is actually going on here in Greece and in the larger Human Rights Activism community. I will also be honest about my own thoughts and feelings about the situation.
I hope by doing this that you will feel empowered to do the same. You know that silly old teachers motto "Lead by example." Or that Gandhi quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
If we want our government and corporations to be transparent with us about the climate crisis (shout out to Extinction Rebellion!) , then we need to do the same.
We've created on Action for Education a blog where if you are a Collaborator, you can publish anything you want and it will feature on our website. You are free to write anything you want and I'm happy to talk with you before publishing (just message me!).
Please share it with your friends and family so that they can respond to your ideas. Your ideas are important and deserve to be read and discussed. We'll be reading what you post, and sharing it on our social media and in our emails. When I say 'we', I mean me. I will be reading every single thing you publish and trying to amplify your voice.
As I said in the title, I am your microphone. I want to help your voice be heard. If you share the same values as us at Action for Education, if you have the same mission - then we are collaborators, we are a team. I believe that working together is the only way we will be able to stop the injustice that those of the refugee and asylum seeking community are experiencing and the only way we will be able to prevent the melting of the Himalayas and thus 2 billion people dying from starvation or dehydration.
This is happening. Just because you're not there, just because you're not thinking about it, just because you don't know what's happening doesn't mean it's not happening.
We can do something. Together, we can make a difference.
I hope you'll make a profile on our site, and I hope you'll start writing and sharing your thoughts. I can't wait to read what you think!
Yours in action,
