EU Audit finds systematic failures in implementation of policy in hotspot camps

A Special Report released this month by the European Court of Auditors has identified multiples instances where ‘there are disparities between the objectives of EU support and the objectives achieved.’

Analysing the work of the European Commission, EASO, Frontex and national agencies, the report highlighted failures to implement recommendations laid out in their 2017 audit.

These include:

  1. The failure to provide adequate care for unaccompanied minors that meets international standards

  2. The failure to upgrade the facilities and speed up the asylum processes in the hotspot camps on the Aegean islands.

The full report is available here.

As ever, Action for Education calls on the European Commission to acknowledge the failure of the hotspot system and EU-Turkey Statement as an ethical and effective mechanism for the reception of asylum seekers into Europe. We call on the EU for the immediate end to geographic restriction in the Aegean and the evacuation of the island camps.
