#1 — Like the Dragon Blood Tree

Songs of Strength by Students on Chios

First poem by Talat Second poem by Arif

I am like King Kong I am like the tree, dam Al Akhwain (dragon blood tree) I am like the universe

You can put me in a small cave You can make me live in the amazon jungle Like I’m a lion to be played with Like a lion you can make into food Go on and turn your back on me I will be out in the world soon, and free Like the dragon blood tree, like the dragon blood tree

I am like mountains I am like Dam Al Akoheen tree I am like the camel in the desert

You can take everything I have You can break everything we built Like I’m nothing to you Like I’m an expatriate in my own country Go on and be a rebel I will be rising in my life Like a camel in the desert, like a camel

  1. With thanks for inspiration from Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper”

  2. The Dragon Blood Tree is a dragon tree native to the Socotra archipelago of Yemen, located in the Arabian Sea. It is so called due to the red sap that the trees produce.
